Oxford Road Station, Oxford Road, Manchester, Greater Manchester
This train station was built in 1959-60 to the designs of WR Headley for the London Midland Region. Its skyline marks this out as one of the most dramatic train stations in England. Oxford Road station’s most striking feature is the main entrance building, which consists of three prefabricated timber shells supported by laminated timber beams. Oxford Road is the only large station rebuilt by prefabricated methods, chosen because a light structure was dictated by the weakness of the viaduct on which the station sits. From July 1959 the Altrincham electric trains began terminating at Oxford Road in two new bay platforms. The whole station was reopened on 12 September 1960. The building had problems and was completely refurbished in 2004.
