Pennsylvania Castle, Pennsylvania Road, Portland, Dorset
This large country house was built in 1800 for John Penn who was the grandson of William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania USA. It was designed by James Wyatt and built from squared Portland stone with slate roofs and crenellated parapets. The building is set on a platform facing out to sea and immediately above the ruins of the former St. Andrew's Church. The original owner was the Governor of Portland. The castle also appears as 'Sylvania Castle' in Thomas Hardy's novel 'The Well-Beloved'.
