Reconstruction Drawing, Stonehenge, Wiltshire
This image was drawn by the court architect Inigo Jones. He gave it the tites "Stone-Heng" and "A Roman Work and Temple". It is possibly the first reconstruction drawing of stonehenge, as he has drawn it as if all the stones were standing. In 1620 King James I (1566-1625), who was staying in Wiltshire at the time, sent Jones to go a survey the ruins of the nearby Stonehenge. Neither Jones or the king could believe that it had been built by Druids or native Britons, they decided that it must have been built by the Romans. This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2011).
