Riding School to former Hillsborough Barracks, Sheffield, South Yorkshire

The former riding school of Hillsbrough Barracks was constructed in 1848-54. Hillsborough was built in response to anxiety over civil unrest. It was one of the first barracks planned with the reformed ideas on military accommodation preceding the Crimean War. The riding school was later used as industrial workshops until the mid-20th century. Riding schools were an essential part of cavalry barracks. The Beaumont Riding School at Aldershot is a contemporary example. This one was converted and altered into offices in 1990.
