Rievaulx Abbey, Rievaulx, North Yorkshire
A birds-eye view of the chapter house and other buildings around the cloister at Rievaulx Abbey, seen from the roof of the abbey church. The monastery was founded in the 12th century and Rievaulx Abbey was once one of the foremost Cistercian monasteries in Britain. It could house 150 monks and 500 lay brethren at any one time. After the dissolution the site was granted to the Earl of Rutland along with the Helmsley estates. This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2010).
