Roche Abbey, Maltby, South Yorkshire

An aerial view of the remains of Roche Abbey, Maltby, from the south west. This Cistercian Abbey was founded in 1147. It was plundered for building material after it was surrendered to the Crown in 1538. In the 1770s it became part of the estate of the Earl of Scarborough. Lancelot 'Capability' Brown was employed to create a picturesque settting for the abbey. Only the walls of the chancel and transepts of the abbey church remain. This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2010).
