Roman shrine to Minerva, Chester, Cheshire
This Shrine is a statue of Minerva carved in to a quarry face in Edgar's Field. It was made in the early 2nd century. It has a 19th century stone hood protecting it. The shrine is the only example surviving in situ of its kind in Britain. It is also thought to be the only representation of a Roman goddess still in its original position in Western Europe. Minerva was the goddess of wisdom.
