Russell Hill Schools, Russell Hill, Croydon, Greater London
This school was built as the Royal Warehousemen's, Clerks's and Drapers's School. It was built in 1863. In 1853 a group of clerks from the wholesale warehouses in the City of London had decided to form a charity to look after the orphan children of their colleagues who had died. Within a year over 1000 people had subscribed to the charity. This included Lord John Russell, who had recently been the Prime Minister. He agreed to become president of the first school in New Cross. By the 1860s the school had grown considerably and so moved to Purley to these new buildings. The building was opened by The Prince of Wales.
