SE wing to Chetham's Hospital, Long Millgate, Manchester, Greater Manchester

This part of Chetham's Hospital was built in c1878 by the architect Alfred Waterhouse. Chetham's School was established in 1422 by Thomas de la Warre as a college of the Collegiate Parish Church of Manchester. It was converted after the Dissolution in 1547 for use as a town house by the Earl of Derby and sequestered (confiscated) under Cromwell. The executors of the local philanthropist Humphrey Chetham purchased the buildings in 1654 for use as a charity school ("hospital") and library. It was restored and enlarged in 1878 by Alfred Waterhouse and again in 1883-95 by Oliver Heywood and Charles James Heywood. It was further altered in 1902. The building is in use today as a music school.
