Shirley Windmill, Upper Shirley Road, Croydon, Greater London

This is a tower mill that was rebuilt here in 1854. It was built to replace an earlier mill that had burnt down that year. The mill itself wasn't new but was brought to the site from Stratford by Lea. It is possible that the mill was originally built in 1740, as this date was found in the 1927 restorations. The mill fell out of use in 1892. In 1906 it was struck by lightening and in 1935 was hit by heavy gales. It was again restored in the 1960s when the machinery was brought back to working order and new fantails and sails added.
