Smelt Chimney, Malham Moor, North Yorkshire

This chimney was built in the late 18th/early 19th century. It was built to serve the lead mining industry. The chimney flue acted as a cooling chamber from which lead could be removed, and to create an effective draught. In 1795 zinc ore was mined nearby and was roasted and calcined at the mill. This industry flourished between 1800 and 1830. It is an important structure linked with a lost industry of the moor area.
