Statue of Robert Hall, De Montfort Square, Leicester
This statue was built in 1871 by the sculptor J. B. Philip. It depicts Robert Hall 1764-1831. He was born at Arnesby near Leicester. He was a Baptist clergyman and outstanding preacher who advocated freedom of the Press. He was influenced by the French Revolution (1789) to speak against corrupt government. He was also a supporter of Joseph Priestley who strongly believed in the free and open exchange of ideas and advocated toleration and equal rights.
