Statue of Sir Robert Juckes Clifton, Victoria Embankment, Nottingham

This statue of Sir Robert Juckes Clifton was built in c1870. Clifton was an MP from 1861 till his death in 1869. One of the main features of Sir Robert's first campaign for election was his opposition to the 'permissive bill' which was trying to limit pubs and alcohol consumption. He won and the number of pubs was not limited. He funded a church, school and the Wilford Toll Bridge. When he died of typhoid in 1869 around 20,000 people attended his funeral.
