Steeton Hall Gateway, South Milford, North Yorkshire

This is fine example of a small, well preserved manorial gatehouse. It dates from c1360. The top of the gatehouse is crenellated and decorated with gargoyles and coats of arms and crests carved onto stone shields. It was the entrance to Steeton Hall which was a manor house. As well as the house there would also have been a range of farming (agricultural) buildings associated with manor. Records show that in 1342 a William de Reygate renewed his licence for a chapel at Steeton and that this was probably associated with the manor house. This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2011). Read detailed archaeological description.
