Stonyhurst College, Stonyhurst, Lancashire
Stonyhurst was originally a medieval house. It was built during the late 14th century, with a domestic chapel which was licensed in 1372. The house was remodelled or rebuilt during the late 16th century. The gatehouse and southern half of the facade were begun in 1592 by Sir Richard Shireburn. The house was abandoned as a residence and had fallen into disrepair by 1754. In 1794 Thomas Weld saved it from demolition by handing it over to the Jesuit refugees from Liege and since then Stonyhurst has been a public school. In 1799 the 'New School' was built. Since then many other buildings have been added.
