Tamar Street, Saltash, Cornwall
A view along the street in Saltash with the bottom of the piers supporting the Royal Albert Bridge in the background. The bridge was built across the River Tamar by Isambard Kingdom Brunel to carry the Great Western Railway. It opened in 1859. The bridge must have loomed large over the street, completely altering its outlook. The noise of the steam trains passing overhead must also have had quite an impact on the lives of people living below it.
