Tate Hill Pier, Whitby, North Yorkshire
This view of Whitby is taken from the pier looking back at the the town below the abbey. This pier is on the site of the original East Pier, dating back to at least the 1600s. The pier was also known later as Burgess Pier. It was made its present length in c1765. It was where the lifeboat was kept from 1822-1863. Lobster pots are piled on the pier and washing is drying above the beach. The small sandy beach is known as Collier Hope after the colliers (ships carrying coal) that used to lay there to unload. This view is still recogisable today (2010).
