The Castle Keep, Colchester, Essex

The castle was built in the late 11th century on the site of a great Roman Claudian Temple (the foundations of which still exist under the castle). It was probably built in 1080 for William the Conqueror as an important defensive fort. When it was built the castle was much larger than any other Norman Castle in England.
