The Great Cross, South Church Street, Bakewell, Derbyshire
The shaft of a Saxon cross dating from the early 9th century. The cross that would have been at the top of the shaft is missing. The railings were put round to protect it in the early 19th century. The shaft is decorated with vines, scrolls and carvings of animals and humans thought to show a mixture of Christian and pagan beliefs.
