The Round House, Sennen, Cornwall
The Round House was originally a capstan house. It was probably built in the 18th century and made higher in the 19th century. The walls are built from granite rubble with tarred weather boarding above and a slate conical roof. Inside, on the ground floor, is a capstan (windlass) that was operated by a team of men. It was originally in the open and the building was built over it. The capstan was used to wind up chains attached to the fishing boats. The chain pulled the boats up the very steep slope from the harbour. The top floor was used as fishermen's stores. In 2010 both floors are in use as shops. The windlass is still in place.
