The Royal Citadel, Plymouth
Built between 1665-1667 on the site of Plymouth Fort, the Royal Citadel was designed by Dutch military engineer Bernard de Gommes to protect Plymouth from an attack by his own countrymen. More than three centuries later, the Citadel continues its military traditions and is now home to the British Army's 29 Commando Regiment. This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2010).
