Exterior of Thomas Cook and Son office in Gallowtree Gate. The Thomas Cook Building was designed by Joseph Goddard as a memorial to Cook who died in 1892. At first floor level is a frieze of four panels illustrating important milestones in Cook's career as a travel agent. The dates 1841 and 1894 carved into the second floor frieze commemorate the date of the first trip he organized and the date of the date of the building. The Bedford Lemere daybook records Burmantofts and Company as clients, and they are likely to have manufactured the ornate terracotta finishes on the building facade.
