Treaty House, 90-90 Oxford Road, Uxbridge, Greater London
The wood-panelled Presence Chamber in the Treaty House, looking towards the fireplace. The room is described as 'Charles the First's Room'. The Treaty House dates from 1576 and was originally known as Place House. It became the Treaty House after Charles I and his Parliamentary opponents met here during the English Civil War. They negotiated the Treaty of Uxbridge between 30 January and 22 February 1645. The Treaty House was later renamed the Crown and Treaty Inn. The panelling shown was sold and exported to America in 1924 for use in an office in the Empire State Building. It was returned and put back in place in 1953 for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. The light is powered by gas.
