Waggon Works, Caton Road, Lancaster, Lancashire
This Waggon Works factory was built in 1863-5. It was built by E G Paley for the Lancaster Carriage and Waggon Works Company. It was used to build railway carriages and waggons. It is built alongside the Midland Railway Line, presumably for transporting raw materials in and the finished products out. The works were finally closed in 1908. In 1914 they were taken over for use as an internment camp for enemy aliens (foreign prisoners). For a while the officer in charge was Robert Graves, who describes the experience in his autobiography 'Goodbye to All That'.
