Whitley Castle, Kirkhaugh, Northumberland
An aerial view of the Roman fort known as Whitley Castle (originally called Epiacum). The unusual diamond-shaped fort was built in the 1st century AD and set in the lands of the Brigantes tribe in the north east of Britain. An inscription dating to around A.D. 213 and pottery attest to 3rd and 4th century occupation.
