Wilberforce House Museum, Kingston Upon Hull
This house in the High Street was built around 1656, probably by William Catlyn for the Lister family. It had new windows and was remodelled internally around 1760 after the Wilberforce family moved here. It was bought by Hull City Corporation in 1896 and opened as a museum in 1906. It was the birthplace of William Wilberforce and was used as a bank between 1784 and 1829. Wilberforce was born on 24 August 1759, the son of a wealthy merchant. In 1780 he became member of parliament for Hull. He supported the abolition of the slave trade and for 18 years regularly introduced anti-slavery motions in parliament.
