York Cold War Bunker, York, York
This bunker was in active service from the 1960s–1990s. It was designed as a nerve-centre to monitor fall-out in the event of a nuclear attack. It was manned by the Royal Observer Corps (ROC), a volunteer group associated with the military. It was opened on 16th December 1961 and in use until The Royal Observer Corps was stood down on 30 September 1991. This was following the end of the Cold War in 1990. There were originally 31 such bunkers, this one was known as No. 20 ROC Headquarters. This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2011). Read detailed archaeological description.
