Commercial investment is often the only means to successfully redevelop an historic building. Many of the most interesting and innovative schemes involve contributions from a wide range of private, public and charitable sector partners. When developing a scheme your first point of contact should be your Local Planning Authority before making contact with your local Historic England team.
Historic England grants
We strongly advise you to see if other sources of public or charitable funding may be available for your project. With a limited number of grants, high demand, and a focus on our national priorities, such as Heritage at Risk, we would expect you to have explored alternative sources of funding prior to making an application to us.
Funds for historic buildings
The Architectural Heritage Fund has funding for anyone wanting to repair, restore or convert to new use historic buildings in England. The buildings should be listed, scheduled or in a conservation area and of acknowledged historic merit.
It includes details of virtually all substantive funding sources which specialise in historic buildings, as well as many (including a variety of regeneration programmes) which provide funding for historic building projects within a wider remit.

The Heritage Funding Directory is a comprehensive guide to sources of financial support for anyone wanting to carry out creative projects connected with the UK's heritage.
It includes details of the majority of funding available from grant-giving trusts, non-governmental agencies and central and local government.
National Lottery Heritage Fund
The National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) sustains and transforms a wide range of heritage though innovative investment in projects with a lasting impact on people and places.
It is the largest dedicated funder of the UK's heritage investing in new projects which promote benefits for the public and which are not primarily for private gain.
