First World War Aircraft Hangars at Old Sarum Airfield
We remain disappointed with the deteriorating condition of the Grade II* listed Hangar at Old Sarum Airfield in Salisbury, and we’re concerned to hear there has been a further collapse.
The hangar was added to the Heritage at Risk Register in November 2020. Since then, we have been working with Wiltshire Council and the owner to assess the condition of the building and push for emergency works, including providing structural expertise and, most recently, conducting internal and external recording to aid future repair and reconstruction work.
Historic England didn’t object to proposals to construct some residential development on land at the airfield on the basis that the hangar would be reinstated, using some of the original material. However, Wiltshire Council refused planning permission for that scheme. We remain extremely concerned that there is no viable plan in place to secure the future of the hangar.
The 3 hangars are highly unusual survivors of the early days of aerial combat and are listed at Grade II*.
