Scheduling Decision: Long Flat, Marske-by-the-Sea
In February 2024, we received an application to consider the remains of a Romano-British settlement at Long Flat Marske-by-the-Sea for scheduling.
Following a local campaign, we also received many letters of support for scheduling from members of the public.
Scheduling is the protection of nationally important archaeological sites. It is applied only to sites of national importance and, even then, only if it is the best means of protection.
After carefully assessing the Long Flat site, we advised that whilst we recognised that the settlement was of local and regional interest, it did not meet the high bar of national importance. The Secretary of State agreed with our advice.
