A series of one hundred and eight prints, many of which are mounted on card or board, showing exterior views of public houses tied to Hall’s Oxford Brewery and Ind Coope and Allsopp Ltd, and a small number of off-licences which sold their beer. Most of the photographs are undated but the collection appears to span much of the 20th century, with the oldest image estimated to have been taken around 1900 and the newest possibly taken as late as the 1970s. The photographs were taken by different photographers and photographic studios, as evidenced by the different photographic processes, the variety of compositional styles and the stamps on the back of some of the prints.
Areas covered by the collection include Gloucestershire, the City of Plymouth, Devon, Reading and Oxfordshire. Four images are unidentified.
Ind Coope and Allsopp Ltd was formed in 1934 by the merger of the Ind Coope and Company brewery and Samuel Allsopp & Sons brewery. The resulting company, which dropped Allsopp from its name in 1959, then merged with Ansells and Tetley Walker in 1961 to form Allied Breweries. Although some the photographs in this series are outside the period of Ind Coope and Allsopp Ltd (1934 – 1961), for simplicity they have been listed as the photographer for all the images. This includes the small number of the prints showing public houses tied to Hall’s Oxford Brewery as this company was taken over by Samuel Allsopp and Sons Ltd in 1926, thus becoming part of Ind Coope and Allsopp with the later merger.
